Pease, a member of the Quaker Pease family of Darlington, was the fifth son of Edward Pease. He was a director of the Stockton and Darlington Railway〔(Robinson's Railway Directors 1841 )〕 and was responsible for the foundation of the seaside resort of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. He was for a time President of the Peace Society, and in 1854 he visited the Tsar of Russia in an attempt to talk him out of the Crimean War.〔(Access My Library )〕 He was resident at Pierremont, Darlington, and Stanhope Castle, Durham.〔(Debrett's House of Commons and Judicial Bench 1886 )〕 Pease was elected MP for Durham South in 1857 and held the seat until 1865.
